Property Tax Collection
Welcome to the Floyd County Sheriff's Office Property Tax page. The Office of the Floyd County Sheriff serves as the primary collector of current-year ad valorem taxes on real and tangible properties within Floyd County. Each year, the Office collects over 25,000 property tax bills worth nearly $18 million on behalf of our county's eleven taxing districts. The Sheriff is responsible for the distribution of these collected taxes to the appropriate taxing authorities and all associated accounting.
The County tax bills are due and payable starting October 1st of each year. If you do not receive your bill before or during the first week of November, please contact the Sheriff's Office. When mailing your payment, please include the payment stub portion of your tax bill or put the tax bill number on your check. Frequently Asked Questions
Why did I receive this bill?
Tax bills for personal property are based on tangible and intangible personal property tax returns you have filed with the State Revenue Cabinet or the Property Valuation Administrator's Office.
I thought my mortgage company took care of this — why did I get this bill?
All real estate property owners receive a copy of the notice, even if a mortgage company handles payment, so you can see how your tax was calculated and where your tax dollars go.
What if I bought or sold the property during the year?
The seller usually pays a pro-rated tax during closing for the portion of the year they owned the property. The buyer is then responsible to pay the entire tax amount when billed. If you are in doubt, refer to your closing settlement statement.
Am I responsible for paying this bill?
Yes. The property owner is legally responsible for ensuring that the tax bill is paid. However, if there is a notice on your bill that your mortgage company will be paying the taxes, you may assume that the mortgage company will use your escrow account to pay the tax.
What payment methods are available?
You may pay your bill by cash, check, money order, or with a credit card online. Make your check or money order payable to: Floyd County Sheriff's Office. Include the bill number on your check or money order. PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH THROUGH THE MAIL.
When is my payment due?
Payments received by November 1, 2026 receive a 2% discount. Face amount is due November 2 through December 31, 2026. A 5% penalty applies January 1–31, 2027, and a 21% penalty applies February 1 through April 15, 2027.
Will I get a receipt?
Yes. Mail-in: A receipt will be provided if you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Pay in person: Our cashier will provide you with a receipt.
What if my check is returned for insufficient funds?
There is a fee of $25 for any returned check. When you resend your payment, additional penalties may apply based on the late payment schedule shown on your bill.
May I pay several bills with one payment?
Yes, if you mail your payment or pay in person. Please check to be sure you have added all appropriate amounts correctly. Any payments received that are NOT for the correct amount will be returned to the payer. Remember to include your stubs for each property bill and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
